Storm-Proof Your Home: A Roof, Fence, and Tree Safety Checklist

Storm damage to a residential roof in Scotland

Scotland gets hit by serious storms every year. High winds, driving rain, and freezing temperatures put roofs, fences, and trees under real stress. Most storm damage to homes in Stirling and Central Scotland is preventable with basic checks done at the right time.

This checklist covers what to look for, what to fix, and when to call in a professional.

Your roof is the first line of defence

Roof damage is the most common and most expensive result of storm weather. A few missing or slipped tiles might not seem urgent, but once wind gets underneath, things escalate fast.

Check for these warning signs:

  • Slipped, cracked, or missing tiles or slates
  • Ridge tiles sitting loose or with crumbling mortar
  • Flashing that has lifted around chimneys or walls
  • Blocked or sagging gutters pulling away from the fascia
  • Damp patches on upstairs ceilings or in the loft space
  • Moss build-up trapping moisture against the roof surface

If your roof is over 20 years old and has never been inspected, that is the single most important thing you can do before storm season. A free roof survey takes less than an hour and identifies problems before they turn into emergency callouts.

For anything beyond cosmetic wear, a professional roofing repair is worth the investment. Patching damaged areas now costs a fraction of what a full repair costs after a storm rips through.

Fences take the worst of the wind

Fences are the most exposed part of most properties. Panel fences in particular act like sails in high winds, and once one panel goes, the rest often follow.

What to check:

  • Posts that rock or lean when pushed
  • Rot at the base of timber posts, especially at ground level
  • Panels that are bowing, splitting, or have come loose from the posts
  • Gravel boards (the horizontal piece at the bottom) that have cracked or fallen away
  • Gate hinges and latches that no longer hold properly

Concrete posts and gravel boards last significantly longer than timber in Scottish weather. If you are replacing a damaged section, it is worth upgrading the posts at the same time.

For storm-damaged fencing or a replacement that will actually last, our fence installation service covers everything from single panel repairs to full boundary replacements.

Trees are the hidden risk

Healthy trees rarely cause problems in storms. It is the ones with decay, deadwood, or poor structure that come down. A mature tree falling on a roof, car, or fence can cause thousands of pounds of damage in seconds.

Warning signs to look for:

  • Dead branches in the canopy, especially large ones over the house or garden
  • Fungal growth (brackets or mushrooms) at the base or on the trunk
  • Cracks or splits in major limbs
  • Trees that lean noticeably more than they used to
  • Dense canopy that has not been thinned in years, catching more wind than necessary

If any tree on your property overhangs your home, a neighbour’s property, or a public path, it is worth having it assessed. Crown reduction and deadwood removal significantly reduce the risk of storm damage without removing the tree entirely.

Our tree services team handles everything from crown thinning and deadwood removal to full tree felling where necessary. All work is carried out safely and the site is left clean.

When to do these checks

The best time to storm-proof your property is before autumn. September and October are ideal because the weather is still manageable and tradespeople are not yet dealing with emergency callouts.

That said, if you spot damage at any time of year, do not wait. A loose ridge tile in March will be a missing ridge tile by November.

A quick seasonal timeline:

  • September to October: Full roof, fence, and tree inspection. Book repairs before winter.
  • After any major storm: Walk the boundary and check for new damage. Look up at the roof from ground level.
  • Spring: Clear gutters of winter debris. Check fence posts after months of wet ground.

What storm-proofing actually costs

Most preventative work is far cheaper than people expect. A roof inspection is free. Replacing a few slipped tiles or repointing ridge mortar is a straightforward job. Reinforcing a fence or removing deadwood from a tree is a single visit in most cases.

Emergency repairs after a storm, on the other hand, are more expensive, harder to schedule, and often involve secondary damage like water ingress or fallen debris.
