Patios & Paving in Stirling

Professional patio installation in Stirling. Sandstone, porcelain, and block paving patios built on a structural sub-base with proper drainage, built to last for decades.

Overview

What Our Patios & Paving Service Covers

Four Seasons Stirling builds professional patios and paved outdoor areas for homes and commercial premises across Stirling, Falkirk, Bridge of Allan, Dunblane, and the wider Central Scotland area. Patio installation in Stirling is one of our most frequently requested services, because a well-built patio adds usable outdoor living space, increases property value, and transforms a garden that sits unused for most of the year. We fit sandstone, porcelain, Indian stone, block paving, and natural granite patios, each built on a structural sub-base with proper falls and drainage so it stays level, clean, and weather-tight for two decades or more. Every patio we install is a full groundworks job: excavation, base preparation, slab laying, pointing, edging, and site clean-up, all handled by one team.

Sandstone or Porcelain: Picking the Right Material

The material you choose sets the tone of your patio. Indian sandstone remains the most popular option in Stirling gardens because it is hard-wearing, weathers beautifully, suits traditional sandstone properties, and typically costs less than porcelain. We work with premium grade Indian sandstone in calibrated 22mm thickness, with popular colours including Raj green, Kandla grey, Autumn Brown, and Mint, plus riven and porcelain-effect finishes depending on the look you want.

Porcelain paving is the premium choice for contemporary patios. It has near-zero water absorption so it never absorbs stains, resists moss and algae better than sandstone, and an R11-rated porcelain slab has an excellent slip rating even in winter. We fit porcelain on a similar sub-base to natural stone, with a priming slurry on the underside of each slab, cut cleanly on a wet-cutting bench for edges and features. Granite setts and block paving suit driveways and utility areas where vehicle weight is a factor.

Built for Scottish Weather

Patios in Central Scotland face two specific challenges: sustained rainfall and hard ground frost. Both cause a cheaply laid patio to fail within a few winters. We see failed patios regularly on call-outs across Stirling, Bridge of Allan, and Falkirk: slabs rocking because the sub-base has washed away, pointing crumbling because the wrong jointing compound was used, and standing water sitting on the surface because the original fall was not set correctly.

Every patio we install follows the same baseline process: excavation to firm subsoil, a Type 1 MOT aggregate sub-base compacted in 75mm layers to a minimum 100mm total depth, a minimum 1 in 80 fall away from the building, each slab laid on a full wet mortar bed, and joints pointed with a polymeric jointing compound rated for exterior use. Drainage is critical: we install linear channel drains where surface water needs managing, or soakaways connected to the sub-base where regulations permit, in line with [Scottish Building Standards guidance on surface water drainage](https://www.gov.scot/publications/building-standards-technical-handbook-2023-domestic/03-environment/3-6-surface-water-drainage/).

Part of a Bigger Garden Plan

A new patio is often part of a wider garden project rather than a standalone job. Clients across Stirling frequently ask us to build a patio alongside retaining walls for a terraced garden, artificial grass for a low-maintenance lawn, or a new fence line to define the boundary of the new outdoor living area.

Because we handle hard landscaping, fencing, groundworks, and soft landscaping in-house, we sequence the work correctly and only send you one quote and one invoice for the full project. We also lay driveways, pathways, steps, garden borders, and other hard landscaping features using the same structural standards. For commercial clients, we build patios, terraces, and paved entranceways for pubs, hotels, care homes, and offices across Stirling and Falkirk.

The Process

How It Works

A straightforward process from first contact to completed work.

1

Free site visit and measurement

We visit your property in Stirling, Falkirk, or the surrounding area, measure the area, assess access and ground conditions, and discuss material options. You receive a fully itemised written quote before any work is booked.

2

Excavation and sub-base preparation

We excavate to firm subsoil, remove all spoil from your property, and lay a minimum 100mm compacted Type 1 MOT aggregate sub-base in layers with a vibrating plate compactor. Drainage is installed at this stage.

3

Slab laying and pointing

Each slab is laid on a full wet mortar bed, levelled to the correct fall, and buttered on the underside for complete contact with the sub-base. Once cured, joints are pointed with a polymeric jointing compound.

4

Finish and clean-up

We clean the finished surface, remove all waste from site, and walk you through the completed patio. A written guarantee on the workmanship is provided with the handover.

My mother in law has just had her garden transformed with John and four seasons landscaping team. Fantastic job, she is so happy with the results. John could not do enough to keep her happy (which is not an easy task) and done exactly what she want. The transformation is tremendous and the price was exceptional. Can highly recommend John and his team.

FAQ

Common Questions

How much does a new patio cost in Stirling?

A new patio in Stirling typically costs between £120 and £200 per square metre for sandstone, and £180 to £260 per square metre for porcelain, fully installed including sub-base, drainage, and pointing. A 25 square metre sandstone patio usually ranges from £3,000 to £5,000. We provide free written quotes for every patio job across Stirling and Falkirk.

What is the best patio material for Scottish weather?

Porcelain paving performs best under sustained Scottish rainfall and frost, because it has near-zero water absorption and resists moss better than natural stone. Indian sandstone is more affordable and still performs well for 20 plus years with proper sealing. Both are far better than concrete flags, which crack under frost heave.

How long does a patio installation take?

A typical residential patio of 20 to 30 square metres takes 5 to 8 working days from excavation to handover. Larger patios, or projects that include retaining walls, steps, or driveways, typically take 2 to 3 weeks. Weather can extend timescales during winter because mortar and jointing compound both need dry conditions to cure properly.

Do I need planning permission for a patio in Scotland?

In most cases, no. Standard patios under 50 percent of your garden area that do not raise the ground level significantly are permitted development in Scotland. Listed buildings, conservation areas such as parts of Bridge of Allan and central Dunblane, and front-of-property paving can sometimes require permission. We check your specific case during the quote visit.

What is the best sub-base for a patio?

For pedestrian patios we lay a minimum 100mm compacted Type 1 MOT aggregate sub-base. Driveways and areas with occasional vehicle access require 150mm minimum. The sub-base is compacted in 75mm layers with a vibrating plate, then topped with a full mortar bed. Cutting corners here is the most common cause of a failed patio.

Can you build a patio on a sloped garden?

Yes, we build patios on sloped gardens regularly across Stirling and Bridge of Allan. We either build into the slope with a retaining wall and a level terrace, or we step the patio down in tiers connected by stone steps. Either option includes structural retaining walls, drainage, and proper falls away from your property.

What is the fall on a patio and why does it matter?

A patio fall is the deliberate slope we build into the surface so water runs off and does not pool. We lay every patio with a minimum 1 in 80 fall away from the building, which sheds surface water toward a lawn, border, or linear channel drain. Flat patios puddle and damage slab joints over time.

What areas do you cover for patio installation?

We build patios across Stirling, Bridge of Allan, Dunblane, Bannockburn, Cambusbarron, Falkirk, Grangemouth, Polmont, Alloa, Tillicoultry, Menstrie, and the wider Central Scotland region. We take on residential and commercial patio projects of any size, from small back-door terraces to large entertaining areas and commercial entranceways.
