Tree Felling

Tree Felling in Stirling

Safe, controlled tree felling in Stirling, Falkirk, and across Central Scotland. Qualified, fully insured tree surgeons handling everything from single garden trees to full site clearance.

Overview

What Our Tree Felling Service Covers

Tree felling is full removal of a tree, taken down to ground level and usually followed by stump grinding. It is permanent and should be a last resort, but for dead, dying, structurally compromised, or badly placed trees it is often the only practical option. Four Seasons Stirling provides tree felling in Stirling and across Central Scotland. Our qualified arborists handle everything from a single dead garden tree to multi-tree clearance on commercial and development sites.

Every felling job starts with a free site assessment. We check the tree’s condition, the access route, any Tree Preservation Orders, and the protection plan for surrounding property. You receive a clear written quote covering felling, stump grinding, and full site clearance with no call-out charge and no obligation to proceed. If your tree only needs cutting back rather than removing, see our broader tree services page for pruning, crown reduction, and crown thinning work.

For dangerous, storm-damaged, or unstable trees, our emergency line is open 24/7. Call 07383 531 328 or get a free quote.

Built for Tight Sites and Big Trees

Most felling jobs we handle in Stirling are not open-ground work. They are mature trees in residential gardens with fences, sheds, conservatories, and neighbouring property within metres of the trunk. That is where sectional dismantling matters. Our team climbs the tree, removes it section by section, and lowers each piece on ropes so nothing hits the ground hard enough to cause damage.

For larger trees, exposed sites, and commercial jobs we also handle straight felling where the space allows it. Every felling plan is set out at the assessment stage, so you know which method we will use and why before booking.

TPOs, Consent, and the Paperwork

Stirling Council protects specific trees with Tree Preservation Orders and applies further restrictions to trees within conservation areas. Felling a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence and can lead to a fine of up to £20,000, with higher penalties possible in serious cases. We check the TPO register and conservation area maps as part of every free assessment and handle the notification or consent application on your behalf where required.

For larger volumes or commercial site clearance, a Scottish Forestry felling permission may also be needed unless an exemption applies. We handle the application on your behalf where it is required. Between March and August we also check the tree for active bird nests, in line with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and delay that part of the work if a nest is found.

Scope of Work

What's Included

Sectional Dismantling

Safe removal of trees in tight spaces by climbing and lowering each section on ropes. Used where straight felling is not possible because of buildings, fences, or neighbouring property.

Straight Felling

Controlled felling of trees in open ground where there is space for the tree to fall safely. Faster and lower cost than sectional removal where the site allows it.

Emergency Tree Removal

24/7 response for storm-damaged, leaning, or unstable trees that pose an immediate risk to people, buildings, or vehicles. Available across Stirling and Central Scotland.

Stump Grinding

Removal of the stump below ground level after felling using a dedicated stump grinder. Leaves the ground ready for replanting, turfing, paving, or building.

TPO & Conservation Checks

We check for Tree Preservation Orders and conservation area status before any felling work and advise on council notification where required.

Full Site Clearance

All logs, branches, and brash removed from site as standard. We can chip waste on site for mulch or leave timber logged for firewood at your request.

Use Cases

Typical Projects

Examples of the kinds of work we carry out under our tree felling service.

  • Dead or dangerous garden tree

A homeowner spots cracks, fungal brackets, or a lean on a mature tree near the house. We assess, fell it safely, grind the stump, and clear the site in a day.

  • Storm-damaged tree

A tree has split, lost a major limb, or come down across a fence or roof. We attend as an emergency, make the site safe, and complete the removal.

  • Development site clearance

Multiple trees and undergrowth need clearing from a building plot or commercial site. We handle felling, stump grinding, root removal, waste disposal, and any Scottish Forestry felling permission required for the site.

  • Boundary tree dispute

A tree is causing structural problems or repeated complaints from a neighbour. We assess root and crown impact, confirm ownership and permissions, then fell and grind.

The Process

How It Works

A straightforward process from first contact to completed work.

1

Free site assessment

We visit your property to assess the tree, check access, photograph the site, and identify any Tree Preservation Orders or conservation area restrictions before quoting.

2

Written quote and permissions

You receive a clear written quote covering felling, stump grinding, and site clearance. We handle the TPO notification, conservation area consent, or Scottish Forestry felling permission where these are needed.

3

Felling day

Our qualified arborists carry out the work using proper rigging, climbing, and cutting techniques. Neighbouring property is protected and the site is managed for safety throughout.

4

Stump grinding and clean-up

The stump is ground below ground level, all timber and brash is removed, and the area is raked clean ready for the next stage, whether that is turfing, planting, or building.

FAQ

Common Questions

How much does tree felling cost in Stirling?

Tree felling costs depend on the size of the tree, access to the site, whether sectional dismantling is needed, and whether you want the stump ground out. Small, straightforward garden trees often start from around £300 felled and cleared, with stump grinding typically quoted separately. Larger or more complex jobs are priced after a free site visit so you know the exact cost before any work begins.

Do I need permission to fell a tree on my own property?

Sometimes. Trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order, or located in a conservation area, need council consent before any felling. Felling without consent can lead to a fine of up to £20,000, with higher penalties possible in serious cases. Larger volumes of timber, or felling on commercial and development sites, may also need a Scottish Forestry felling permission unless an exemption applies. We check all of this as part of the free site assessment.

When is the best time of year to fell a tree?

The dormant season, roughly November to early March, is the standard window for felling deciduous trees in Scotland. The ground is firmer, leaves are off, and nesting risk is usually lower. Felling between March and August is restricted under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 if active nests are present, so we check the tree for nesting birds before any work in that window. See our guide to the best time to fell a tree in Scotland for the full picture.

Will you remove the stump as well?

Yes. Stump grinding is offered with every felling job and can be included in the quote. We grind the stump below ground level so the area can be turfed, planted, or built over. Stump grinding is faster and far less disruptive than manual stump extraction.

Do you handle emergency tree felling?

Yes. We provide 24/7 emergency call-outs for trees that have been damaged in storms, are leaning towards a building, or have lost major limbs. Call 07383 531 328 at any time and we will aim to attend the same day or the next morning depending on conditions.

Will you damage the lawn or driveway?

We take steps to protect your property throughout the job. Ground mats are used to spread the load of equipment, brash is chipped on site or removed as it comes down, and we sweep the area clean before leaving. If access is tight, we discuss the protection plan as part of the quote so you know what to expect.

What happens to the wood?

By default we remove all timber and brash from site. If you would like to keep the logs for firewood we will cut them to a length you specify and stack them tidily. Brash can be chipped on site for garden mulch if you have a use for it.
